Tired fixtures, finishes and linings are being replaced, one step at a time, to bring the flat up to date. Particular attention is being paid to the simple expression of materials: a new oak floor throughout the living spaces, with wide boards and slightly pronounced grain; warm, oak-faced kitchen cabinetry; a limestone kitchen floor flecked though with fossils.

The cellular nature of the flat is enjoyed, with each room acquiring its own particular character and receiving small additions or interventions to complement this. Targeted structural works will open up small areas that will make a big difference: A wall in the bathroom will be removed to rationalise the plan and make it more generous; A South facing window to the master bedroom will be lowered and a small balcony added, so that a book might be read in the sun with a quiet view over parkland.
